Introduction
At Maple City Music, we celebrate artists who challenge conventions, preserve musical traditions, and expand our understanding of what music can be.
Through our Vermont Artist of the Week series, we spotlight musicians whose creativity enriches Vermont's cultural landscape while offering listeners something truly unique.
This week's spotlight features Julian Calv, a composer, performer, instrument builder, and musical innovator whose work draws inspiration from one of the most fascinating figures in twentieth-century music.
Through his mastery of the trimba and dedication to Moondog's musical legacy, Julian has established himself as one of Vermont's most original artistic voices.
The Artist's Story
Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1999, Julian Calv pursued his passion for music through formal study at Moravian University, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in composition, music education, and classical piano in 2021.
During his academic career, Julian developed a deep interest in the work of legendary composer Moondog, the unconventional musician and street performer whose influence extended across classical, jazz, minimalist, and experimental music.
That passion led Julian to study directly with Stefan Lakatos, the only known student of Moondog himself.
This rare apprenticeship earned Julian the distinction of becoming what many describe as "Moondog's grand student," carrying forward a remarkable musical lineage while developing his own artistic identity.
Preserving a Living Musical Tradition
What makes Julian's work particularly fascinating is his commitment to preserving and expanding the unique traditions associated with Moondog's music.
He performs on handcrafted and specialized instruments, including:
- The Trimba
- The Oo
- Various percussion instruments inspired by Moondog's designs
These instruments create rhythmic textures and sonic landscapes rarely heard in contemporary music.
Rather than treating these traditions as museum pieces, Julian incorporates them into new compositions that feel fresh, vibrant, and relevant.
His music demonstrates how artistic traditions can remain alive through innovation and exploration.
Essential Listening
Route 4 (2023)
A striking place-based composition built around field recordings and sounds collected from Interstate Route 4.
The piece blends environmental sound with trimba-driven rhythmic structures, creating a musical portrait of movement and place.
Thorn & Roots (2023)
An energetic and improvisational work inspired by spontaneous public performance.
Driven by syncopated rhythms and layered percussion, the piece showcases Julian's ability to transform simple musical ideas into captivating experiences.
Nonstop Motion (2024)
Julian's debut full-length album represents a major milestone in his artistic development.
The album features nine compositions combining original works with pieces connected to the Moondog tradition.
Featuring contributions from pianist Ava Bloomfield and the vocal ensemble Non-Prophets, Nonstop Motion demonstrates Julian's versatility as both composer and performer.
The album's title perfectly captures the spirit of the music: forward-moving, rhythmic, and constantly evolving.
Music Beyond Traditional Spaces
One of the most inspiring aspects of Julian's work is his belief that music belongs everywhere.
In 2024, he organized and led a performance of Moondog vocal rounds at Southern State Correctional Facility, bringing music directly to audiences often overlooked by traditional arts programming.
Projects like these reflect a commitment to music as a tool for connection, education, and community engagement.
They also align closely with Vermont's longstanding tradition of making the arts accessible to all.
The Street Music Connection
Like Moondog before him, Julian embraces the idea that music should be experienced in public spaces as well as concert halls.
His performances often blur the lines between formal composition and spontaneous community interaction.
Whether performing on a city street, in a gallery, at a community event, or in a traditional concert venue, Julian creates experiences that invite curiosity and participation.
His work reminds us that music is not confined to institutions; it lives wherever people gather to listen.
