Record Grading Guide

At Maple City Music, we understand that condition matters. Whether you're a casual listener or a serious collector, we strive to provide accurate and honest grading for the records we sell.

We currently use a simplified grading system based on widely accepted collector standards. As we continue to process and evaluate our growing inventory, we are actively working to grade all products in our catalog. With thousands of items available, this is an ongoing process, and some listings may not yet include a grade.

Most importantly, we grade conservatively. We would rather have a customer pleasantly surprised by an item's condition than disappointed by an overly generous description.

Mint (M)

A Mint record is in perfect condition and has never been played. The vinyl, packaging, and all included materials are flawless with no visible defects or signs of handling.

Because truly Mint records are rare, Maple City Music uses this grade sparingly.

Near Mint (NM or Nr M)

A Near Mint record is exceptionally clean and shows little to no evidence of use. The vinyl should play beautifully with minimal or no surface noise attributable to wear.

The jacket and packaging may show only the slightest signs of handling.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

A Very Good Plus record has been well cared for and remains in excellent listening condition.

The vinyl may show light signs of use, including minor surface marks that do not significantly affect playback. Some occasional background noise may be present, but should not overpower the music.

Jackets may show light shelf wear, corner wear, or minor cosmetic imperfections.

Many collectors consider VG+ to offer the best balance of condition and value.

Very Good (VG)

A Very Good record remains enjoyable to listen to, but will show more noticeable signs of use.

The vinyl may have visible wear, surface marks, or light scratches, which can cause background noise during playback. The music should still be fully enjoyable, but cosmetic and playback imperfections may be present.

Jackets may show more pronounced wear, including ring wear, seam wear, creasing, writing, stickers, or other signs of age and handling.

Our Grading Philosophy

We take pride in grading conservatively and describing items as accurately as possible. Music collecting is built on trust, and we want our customers to purchase with confidence.

Because grading can be subjective, we encourage customers to contact us with any questions regarding the condition of a specific item.
